It appears the Detroit Red Wings have a trade in mind, but it may not be entirely up to them whether or not they manage to pull one off.

On Saturday night during the weekly 'Headlines' segment on the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast some of the National Hockey League's top insiders gathered to discuss the topics of the day. One of those many topics was the future of the Detroit Red Wings and specifically how it would pertain to the upcoming trade deadline for the 2018 - 2019 NHL regular season.

The expectation has been for some time now that the Red Wings will position themselves as sellers at the deadline and the widespread belief has been that talented forward Gustav Nyquist remains the best available trading chip at the disposal of Detroit Red Wings' general manager Ken Holland. There is of course one major issue in this scenario however and that is due to the fact that Holland himself gave Nyquist when he signed him to a new deal back in the summer of 2015.

You see in reality although many believe that Nyquist will in fact be moved ahead of the trade deadline, whether or not that happens is entirely in the hands of the player. That is due to the fact that when Holland signed the talented forward to a short term deal in 2015 he also included a full no trade clause in the final two years of that contract. This means that Nyquist can in theory reject absolutely every trade that the Red Wings come to him with, although it would appear that the Red Wings remain hopeful the deal will get done.

Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Chris Johnston revealed during the segment that the Red Wings have in fact already approached Nyquist to request a list of teams to which he would be willing to accept a trade. What was particularly interesting about Johnston's report however was the fact that at this time no one really seems to know which way Nyquist will go with this. According to Johnston there has been no word on whether or not he intends to play ball with the Red Wings, and if he doesn't there is nothing the organization can do about it.
