Report: Red Wings preparing to make a trade

Believe it or not but the Detroit Red Wings currently sit nearly $4 million OVER the NHL salary cap. The highest salaried team in the NHL finished 25th overall last season and, according to a report from Mlive.com reporter and Red Wings insider Ansar Khan, the team won’t have its salary situation resolved until after the upcoming pre-season. And that that resolution may very likely come as a result of a trade.

Khan reports that the team’s general manager Ken Holland plans on starting the season slightly over the salary cap and will have to get creative in order to be in compliance with the NHL’s hard cap. "If everybody is healthy when we get to opening day, we'll probably have to make a move," Holland said. "I'm anticipating we'll be over by a little bit."

Players who have been speculated to be on the move are goaltender Petr Mrazek and forward Luke Glendening. Mrazek, in particular, could be an intriguing asset for some teams given the potential he has flashed in limited action. His $4 million annual salary may be a bit large for some teams to swallow, but the fact that his deal expires next offseason makes it much more palatable.
