The Detroit Red Wings have a lot of work to do in the offseason and general manager Ken Holland has already been hard at work.
According to a report from Helen St. James of the Detroit Free Press the Red Wings have signed soon to be restricted free agent Riley Sheahan to a two year contract.
St. James' revealed the terms of the deal in her report:
The Detroit Red Wings have taken care of one of their restricted free agents.
Forward Riley Sheahan has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with a salary cap hit of $2.075 million.
The contract will take Sheahan, 24, into unrestricted free agency at its conclusion.
While $2.075 million per season is not huge money for Sheahan, the value in this deal from his perspective is the fact that he will be a free agent at the end of his current contract, allowing him to maximize a return for his services on the unrestricted free agent market.
Sheahan had a bit of a down year this season, so it will be interesting how his current contractual status motivates him to perform in the next two seasons.
