Report: Red Wings sign one of the top free agent forwards on the market.
Keystone Press.

The Detroit Red Wings were hoping for a big splash in free agency when they moved the contract of Pavel Datsyuk at the draft, and they got just that.

While it may not have been the first name on the Red Wings list, with Steven Stamkos choosing to remain as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning, the signing they announced today was a very good one, and no doubt greatly improves their team.

The Red Wings have officially announced that they have come to terms on a 6 year deal with former New York Islanders forward Frans Nielsen. While the Red Wings did not officially disclose the financials of the deal, Aaron Ward is reporting that it carries an average annual value of $5.35 million.

Nielsen has average 30 goals per season is his last 3 seasons as an Islanders, and is widely regarded as one of the more underated players in the National Hockey League. The added benefit here for Detroit is they avoided paying out the monster money that free agent like Milan Lucic received today.
