The Ottawa Senators are miles away from being a relevant playoff team and now it sounds like this will get even more difficult for them down the stretch for what remains of the 2019 - 2020 National Hockey League regular season.

On Monday the Ottawa Senators made a surprise announcement when they revealed that rookie goaltender Marcus Hogberg was leaving the team for the foreseeable future. At this time it is unclear why Hogberg is departing the Senators, however Senators head coach DJ Smith hinted at the fact that the reason for Hogberg leaving the team were personal ones. Although Smith did address reporters it was clear from his choice of words that even he did not know the full details regarding why Hogberg was stepping away, either that or he was deliberately playing coy with reporters.

“Marcus Hogberg went home for family reasons and we’ll know more here shortly,” coach D.J. Smith told reporters before the club left Monday afternoon for Pittsburgh as per the Ottawa Sun.

As a result of Hogberg's departure the door has now been opened for Ottawa Senators prospect Filip Gustavsson who was called up on Monday when it was announced that Hogberg would be leaving the team. The former Pittsburgh Penguins second round pick (55th overall) at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft previously appeared in 23 games for the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League this season recording a 3.28 goals against average and an .885 save percentage to go with it. If he does indeed get to play it would be his first taste of action in the National Hockey League, however it does not sound like the plan is to use him very much if at all right now, at least not as anything more than a backup.

“He’s here to backup but if we see a chance to get him in there we will but, in saying that, it’s Andy’s net for now,” Smith said.

It is unclear at this time what the prospects of Marcus Hogberg returning prior to the conclusion of this current season are, but if his rookie year does end here he will have appeared in 23 games while recording a 3.04 goals against average and a respectable .909 save percentage.
