The Senators made quite a fuss about this.

The Ottawa Senators began leaking a rumor last night suggesting that they had a major hockey announcement coming on Tuesaday.

With reports suggesting that several players, members of management, and even owner Eugene Melnyk would be on hand for the press conference there were two big rumors going around regarding what the announcement would be. The first was the possibility of an outdoor game on  Parliament Hill in 2017 and the second rumor suggested the announcement could focus on the early stages of a new arena for the team.

Both of those rumors have however been proven false, and instead on Tuesday the Senators announced that they would be retiring the jersey of long-time forward Daniel Alfredsson, arguably the most beloved player in the history of the Ottawa Senators franchise.

"Daniel is an iconic figure in the history of our franchise. We are very excited to announce that the Senators Player Honouring Committee has unanimously decided that as we embark on the Ottawa Senators 25th season in the NHL, this would be the perfect time to have Daniel’s number 11 raised to the rafters of Canadian Tire Centre," said Senators owner Eugene Melnykv in an official statement. "Daniel has consistently demonstrated class and excellence throughout his NHL career so it is only fitting his jersey number be retired to hang alongside the number 8 of legendary Frank Finnigan."
