REPORT: Sens' GM Dorion RIPS his team’s personnel
Keystone Press

Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion used an opportunity on Ottawa sports radio station TSN 1200 this morning to absolutely rip into his team’s hockey analytics department. When discussing the effectiveness of injured defenseman Mark Borowiecki, Dorion did not mince words saying, “I want to punch our analytics people on a daily basis because they come to me with stuff that when they tell me that Boro’s no good, I say ‘why don’t you go on the ice with Boro and tell me how much fun it is to get hit ten times in a row?’ Guys go the other way sometimes, but analytics can’t tell you that.”

Wow…tell us how you really feel, Pierre. While it’s clear that a bruising defender like Borowiecki doesn’t fare well when analyzing his advanced statistics and metrics, it’s clear that his general manager puts value in the way he plays. Presently, there’s no way to measure toughness, grit or determination, which are all valuable assets in a physical sport like hockey.

Whether you agree with Dorion’s stance on the matter or not, you have to admit that it’s refreshing to hear a GM who will defend his depth players so passionately to the media.
