The Ottawa Senators have just placed one of their journeyman players on the waiver wire.

According to a breaking news report from Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliote Friedman the Ottawa Senators have just placed Max McCormick on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the American Hockey League. It's an interesting move because McCormick is on a very cheap deal but remains on a one way contract which forces the Senators to waive him if they want to send him down to the AHL.

McCormick has not been a player of massive importance the Senators this season appearing in only 14 games total thus far in the 2018 - 2019 NHL regular season and had only 1 goal and no assists to his name over that stretch. Additionally McCormick has collected 4 penalty minutes and is a plus minus rating of -6 on the season thus far.

It's safe to call McCormick a depth option but he is one that comes with an extremely reasonable price tag and that could potentially be enough to result in a team taking a look at him on waivers. McCormick is currently in the second year of a two year deal and it is one that only pays him a salary of $650,000, a very manageable cap hit for most NHL organizations. Now there is of course the fact of the matter that he would consume an additional roster spot if claimed and that could result in the team claiming him having to waive or send down a player of their own, so that may decrease his chances of being grabbed significantly.

That being said though McCormick is not a particularly exciting player and if only a single team puts in a waiver claim for him then they themselves would be eligible to send him down to the American Hockey League without having to go through the waivers process. If he does clear waivers I believe it's unlikely that the will see much more playing time at the NHL level this season, barring injuries of course, as it appears that Ottawa Senstors head coach Guy Boucher is not a particularly big fan of McCormick's play on the ice.
