Report: Sharks make shocking roster move
Keystone Press

According to a report from The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz, the San Jose Sharks will sit both Timo Meier and Jannik Hansen for this afternoon’s game against the New York Rangers. In their places will be Barclay Goodrow and Joel Ward.

This is a surprising development given Meier’s draft pedigree and the price paid to acquire Hansen. Meier was drafted 9th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and has put up a goal and an assist in seven games for the Sharks so far this season. The 21-year-old Swiss native was being heralded as the successor to Patrick Marleau this offseason, but his slow start has the team concerned.

As for Hansen, the 31-year-old veteran was acquired by the Sharks from the Vancouver Canucks at last year’s trade deadline for top prospect Nikolay Goldobin. Hansen has just one assist in seven games so far this season. Meanwhile, Goldobin is amongst the league leaders in the AHL with Vancouver’s affiliate the Utica Comets.
