Report: Sportsnet ranks the best moves of the NHL offseason
Keystone Press

With the dust now settled on the flurry of moves surrounding the NHL Entry Draft and the NHL’s free-agency period, Sportsnet writer Luke Fox is taking a stab at ranking the NHL’s biggest winners of this offseason.

At the top of the list? The Calgary Flames. Fox argues that the both the Travis Hamonic and Mike Smith acquisitions, along with the smart re-signings of Michael Stone and Michael Ferland put the Flames in the lead.

Fox also highlights the solid moves made by Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill, as well. Nill showed incredible resolve this summer and swung for the fences in acquiring Ben Bishop and Marc Methot on the trade market and then dipping into the free agent pool to nab Alex Radulov and Martin Hanzal. Oh… and he brought legendary coach Ken Hitchcock back into the fold.

The worst team on Fox’s list? The Washington Capitals. Hit hard by the departure of several key players including Kevin Shattenkirk, Justin Williams, Karl Alzner, Nate Schmidt and Marcus Johansson, GM Brian MacLellan has a lot of work to do if he wants the Caps to repeat as President’s Tophy winners.
