Report: Stanley Cup winners won't get their “day with the Cup”

According to a report from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic, one of the coolest traditions in all of hockey is off the table in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. LeBrun reports that Stanley Cup winners will NOT be afforded their "day with the Cup" like they usually would in a normal season and that the Stanley Cup will remain in either Dallas or Tampa Bay for the duration of the championship reign. This effectively ends the "travelling Cup" roadshow that fans get treated to each offseason and it means that players won't be able to celebrate with their friends, family and local community as they have in past years.

This was 100% predictable, but frankly it's so disappointing. I guess it's one of those things that I never really considered until now. In any case... this sucks.

The "travelling Cup" stories are some of the best stories that hockey fans get in the offseason. Personally, I get a real kick out of seeing where in the world the Stanley Cup ends up and it's always heartwarming to see the winners bring the trophy back to their hometown for a celebration. At this point though, maybe I should just be thankful that we have a 2019-20 Stanley Cup champion in the first place. Here's hoping that whoever wins the Cup that they get an opportunity to bring it back home one day.
