Report: Study reveals ethnic bias among NHL referees.

A study has revealed ethic bias among National Hockey League officials.

In a recent report from the CBC, the studies co-authors Kevin Mongeon and Neil Longley discussed the findings of their study, findings they claim point to a very real, and now documented trend among NHL officials.

"Our study looked at discriminatory penalty calling, with respect to ethnicity of referees," said Mongeon as per the CBC.

"English, French, European and International players have found that French referees tend to call more penalties on English players, as compared to French players.

This does not appear to have been a case of a limited sample size either, the study analysed over 2.6 million player shifts before reaching it's conclusion, one that Mongeon says is clearly demonstrated in his work.

"When two French referees are on the ice, English players get called for more penalties compared to French players," said Mongeon.

The two men have published their findings online, and the study states it's result "are broadly consistent with the prior discrimination literature and are intuitively reasonable within the context of the historic French–English tensions throughout Canada’s history."
