Report: Surprising update in the Patrick Marleau saga
Keystone Press

With rumors swirling the past week that Patrick Marleau would be moving on from the San Jose Sharks and exploring options on the free agent market, it seems that Sharks general manager Doug Wilson has finally given in to public demands. The biggest sticking point in a negotiation between Marleau and the team has been the Sharks’ unwillingness to offer the team legend more than a one year contract, but now it seems they’ve softened their position.

You hear that sound? That’s thousands and thousands of Sharks fans breathing a collective sigh of relief. Not only are the Sharks a better team with Marleau on it, but if he stays in San Jose it’s likely that superstar Joe Thornton also stays in San Jose. While it’s been difficult to imagine these two playing anywhere else in the NHL after all they’ve done for the Sharks, there’s been a real possibility given the team’s hardline stance on their contract negotiations.

Hopefully this latest development will pave the way for both Marleau and Thornton to finish their careers as they should, as San Jose Sharks.
