Report: Top level Leafs executive headed to Buffalo?

A big part of the Leafs' future could just walk right out the door.

Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula shocked the hockey world last week when he fired the team’s general manager Tim Murray and its head coach Dan Bylsma. Immediately afterwards, Pegula held a press conference where he answered questions of the team’s future from the assembled media. One thing became very clear: Pegula is looking for some new blood to take over the team.

This revelation has led many media outlets, including Toronto Maple Leafs blog Pension Plan Puppets, to speculate that current Leafs assistant general manager Kyle Dubas would be a good fit just south of the border. What Dubas lacks in experience, he more than makes up for in his innovative approach. Hiren by the Leafs at just 28 years-old after three stellar seasons as the general manager of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Dubas has been instrumental in the Leafs’ roster teardown and rebuild since 2014.

It’s been rumoured that Dubas will be the successor to Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello once his contract expires, but might Dubas want to take a crack at the big job before then? Would the Leafs even be interested in helping out their rivals in Buffalo? It’s an interesting proposition, nonetheless and we can speculate that at the very least the Sabres will do the necessary due diligence on the GM wunderkid.
