REPORT: Top NHL Prospect NOT eligible for AHL next season
Keystone Press

It’s NHL or bust for 2017 NHL Entry Draft prospect Nico Hirschier next season. His QMJHL team the Halifax Mooseheads confirmed today that Hirschier is in fact not on loan from SC Bern in the Swiss league, making him ineligible to play in the AHL next season.

What does this mean for the Flyers? It means that should Hirschier be available for general manager Ron Hextall at pick number two in the draft and they select him, he’ll either need to play for the Flyers immediately or spend another season playing junior hockey in Quebec. Due to the transfer agreement between Canadian’s largest junior hockey league, the CHL, and the NHL, players under 20 years of age must suit up at the highest level or continue to play in junior. It’s a frustrating agreement for many teams and Hirschier’s case is just another example of a broken system.

Whether the Flyers land Hirschier this season remains to be seen. However, if they do land the coveted prospect they’ll be getting a high-end offensive threat who managed 38 goals and 86 points in just 57 games in 2016-17.
