It didn’t take long for veteran defenseman Kevin Shattekirk to find a new team in the NHL after the New York Rangers bought out his contract last week.

On Monday morning, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced that they had signed the veteran blue liner to a one-year contract, worth $1.75 million. He also got a no-trade clause protection in his new deal.

Last week, the Rangers proceeded to buy out the contract of the defenseman. Shattenkirk played only two seasons after signing a $26.6 million, four-year contract with New York. He had just seven goals and 44 assists in 119 games.

While some believed he would struggle to find a new team in the league, it has just been reported by Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period that two other clubs were fighting to land Shattenkirk before he landed a deal with Tampa.

According to Bernstein, both the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks were looking to sign Shattenkirk before he decided to remain in the Eastern Conference.

The Ducks reportedly made a multi-year offer to the blue liner, while the Kings inquired but didn’t get to make a pitch. Shattenkirk agreed to join the Lightning, which could be the boost he needs to get back on track in the NHL.

On top of that, Bernstein's colleague, David Pagnotta, also revealed that the Colorado Avalanche, who selected him  in the first round, 14th overall, at the 2007 NHL Draft, was also inquiring about him. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets were also serious about landing the defender.

He might feel better knowing that some teams were fighting to get his services… Confidence boost!
