REPORT: Veteran defenceman has HARSH comments following Caps’ early exit

Different season, same story. The Washington Capitals were handed their third straight second-round exit on Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Every elimination hurts, but this one seems to be a pretty hard one for the Caps.

Veteran defenceman and pending unrestricted free agent Karl Alzner did not mince his words following his team’s elimination. “It’s just extreme disappointment,” Alzner said, in an interview with the Washington Post. “We honestly thought we were the best team in the playoffs, and we showed it in (flashes). But the second round again…”

Along with T.J. Oshie, Daniel Winnik, Justin Williams and Kevin Shattenkirk, Alzner is set to hit the open market on July 1st.

The Capitals went all-in during the season in hopes to make it far into the playoffs: they traded a first-round pick to St. Louis for Kevin Shattenkirk, and two second-round picks for Montreal's Lars Eller.

Even though Washington had a tremendous regular season, their success cannot be translated into playoff wins. They won their second President's trophy in a row, with a record of 55-19-8 for 118 points.
