Report: Veteran UFA Streit has an offer on the table

Will it be enough to lure the 39 year-old back for another season?

A report from french-language reporter Marc De Foy for Le Journal De Montreal claims that the Montreal Canadiens are in negotiations with veteran UFA Mark Streit on a potential deal.

While the translation is a bit rough, De Foy essentially states that the team and the player have had discussions and that Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin tried unsuccessfully to acquire Streit at the NHL’s Trade Deadline in March. Of course, the Habs missed out and Streit went on to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins and won his first Stanley Cup championship with the team, despite barely seeing any action with the team during the playoffs. De Foy speculates that the Habs have offered Streit a one-year deal worth approximately $1.5 million.

Streit, of course, began his NHL career with the Canadiens in 2005-06 and has gone on to carve out a career as one of the NHL’s most prominent power play quarterbacks of the past decade. Habs fans may remember Streit’s electric 2007-08 campaign in which he broke out for 13 goals and a career high 62 points. Since then his production has dipped, but he’s still a quality defender capable of 30+ points if put in the right circumstances.

Might he get a shot in Montreal? With questions still surrounding a potential Andrei Markov return, the door is open for Streit in Montreal.
