When news broke earlier this week that the Colorado Avalanche had received permission from the Toronto Maple Leafs to interview young Leafs assistant general manager Kyle Dubas, Leafs fans were stunned. Dubas, the 30 year old executive hired by president Brendan Shanahan, was and is still thought of as being a promising young talent in the team’s front office and could potentially fill the general manager position one day.

That’s why rumors of him leaving the Leafs to join the Avs were met with such confusion. If this kid is so great, why are the Leafs just giving him away? Well, not so fast. The Avs did not hire Dubas, for reasons unknown, and Dubas remains with the Leafs. What that means for his future though is a little less clear.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports two contradictory stories in his latest 30 Thoughts article for Sportsnet. One: Dubas is not in the team’s plans for next season and will walk away from the organization on July 1st when his contract expires. Two: Dubas has quietly signed an extension and will be with the club for 2017-18 and beyond. Which version of the story is true will ultimately come to light as the offseason approaches, but Leafs fans can’t help but wonder, “what’s up with Kyle Dubas?”
