The Detroit Red Wings are struggling to come to terms on a new deal for restricted free agent forward Tomas Tatar and now we may know why.

A report from Detroit Red Wings insider Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press has revealed that Tatar has made significant demands for his next deal, specifically when it comes to the topic of term on that contract.

From Helene St. James' report:

The Wings have offered as much as five years. Tatar’s side is looking for a deal in the range of seven years.

St. James believes Tatar will command somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 million per season, a number that the Red Wings would likely be amendable to on a deal with less term. Needless to say a seven year deal at that term would be a commitment of $35 million to Tatar, making it easy to see why the Red Wings may balk at that type of deal.

That being said Tatar has put up over 20 goals and over 45 points in each of his last three National Hockey League seasons, and arbitration could result in a very short deal, one that could speed up his journey to unrestricted free agency.
