Report: Zetterberg issues statement on his future in Detroit

According a report late last month from a Swedish language publication Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg is planning to retire from professional hockey following the 2018-19 season, which would put the team in a serious cap crunch. Now however, the 36-year-old veteran is changing his tune.

Interesting. If true, this means that Zetterberg will play through the 2020-21 season and thereby fulfill his contractual commitments to the Wings and they’ll be faced with no salary cap implications. In addition, the Wings could use his offensive production, even if it declines over the duration of his contract. The Wings are woefully thin on forward in terms of scoring depth and could likely use Zetterberg’s help even if he’s not the 80+ point player he used to be.

What do you think Wings fans? Are you happy with four more years of Z?
