The Pittsburgh Penguins are taking on the Senators in Ottawa later tonight and that was probably a date the Joseph family had circled on the calendar. Brothers Pierre-Olivier (Penguins) and Mathieu Joseph (Senators) invited more than 50 friends and family members that travelled to see then face another. The game was supposed to mark a first NHL meeting between Joseph and his brother Pierre-Olivier.

However, hours before puck drop, Senators head coach D.J. Smith announced that Mathieu Joseph will be a healthy scratch Wednesday, but gave “no comment” as to why.

Senators insider Ian Mendes for The Athletic commented: “Smith knows Joseph is one of his best 12 options at forward. No way he’s scratched without a reason.”

He then started investigating on why Mathieu Joseph was being sent to the press box. While it was reported that star forward John Norris was finally returning to the Sens’ lineup, it sounds like there is no valid explanation on why Joseph is a healthy scratch. To make room for Norris, the Senators placed Jake Lucchini on waivers Tuesday.

Mathieu Joseph was activated back from injured reserve earlier this week and is apparently healthy and ready to play. He has been out since Dec. 8, has recorded nine points, 28 shots on goal and 39 hits in 25 games this season. It would have been great to see him injected into the Senators' lineup, especially with loved ones in town to see the brothers' first professional duel.

Mendes explained how he dug some more into the “situation over past few hours, but all sides quiet right now.” He added:

“My sense is this isn’t a traditional “coach versus player” healthy scratch situation. I also get the sense this might have something to do with something non-hockey related.”

Stay tuned…
