We all remember when Jacksonville Jaguars All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey made waves in the hockey world, claiming in an interview with ESPN's Mina Kimes that he could probably crack the NHL with six months of training.

On Friday, it was AkBars Kazan of the KHL that made headlines with a surprising announcement, saying they have signed forward Yevgeni Savin to a contract. The link with Ramsey? Savin was previously known as a football forward with experience in Russian Premiere league who retired back in 2015. The report comes from KHL insider Aivis Kalnins, who seems as surprised as we all are with this announcement.

In the press release, the team states that Savin "has 166-game experience in the National championship scoring 46 goals." It'd be important to let fans know they're talking about soccer here, not hockey.

Kalnins noted in his report on Hockey Buzz that the retired soccer player has already practiced with his new team and thanked his new teammates for helping to settle in with the club and other little things like helping him put on his equipment. He also wanted to let fans know that hockey isn't a total stranger to him.

''I've played some of it as a kid and during the breaks in soccer season.''

The PTO contract Savins signed on Friday is valid until December 26th of 2018.

''I just want to experience the atmosphere, try myself as a hockey player, I want to practice with the team and get ready for their next KHL game.''

When Ramsey made his outrageous comments close to the start of training camp back in September, several NHLers were asked about his claim and all disagree on what he thought he needed to do to become a professional hockey player.

"I think it's insulting to our league," Buffalo Sabres star Jack Eichel had told Emily Kaplan of ESPN. "For us as players, we've dedicated our lives to be playing in the NHL. To think after six months you could come play arguably one of the hardest sports in the world? I mean, I think it's ridiculous he would say that. It's ignorant."

It will be interesting to see how KHL players feel about this surprising new signing...
