Embarrassing if true.

Ridiculous accusations against Alex Ovechkin coming from the Penguins locker room.

On Saturday night Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ron Hainsey suffered an ugly looking injury when he was struck in the back of the head and neck by a hard shot from Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.

It was a terrible accident but now it sounds like there may be some members of the Penguins locker room who think it may have been somewhat more than. First here's what Penguins beat writer Josh Yohe reported:

One got the sense from a couple of Penguins after the game that they believed Ovechkin, while not necessarily acting with intent, was pretty careless regarding how he fired the puck in Hainsey's direction.

The suggestion when you use this type of phrasing is that there is room to believe Ovechkin may or may not have acted with intent. While it seems ridiculous to believe that Ovechkin intentionally hit a player in the back of the head despite the fact that the player was facing him during the shot, there are in fact those who appear to believe this is true.

David Todd of the pro hockey writers association had this to say about it:

Exactly my reaction when I saw Ovechkin’s shot last night. To be that far off target so quickly…

Ovechkin appeared genuinely concerned for Hainsey after he struck him with his shot, and to level or even merely imply this kind of accusation comes off like rather embarrassing behavior for all involved.

Update: Responding to criticism Yohe has now flat out stated that members of the Penguins locker room suggested it was intentional.
