The Edmonton Oilers have waived forward Rob Klinkhammer on Thursday, according to multiple sources.

Klinkhammer has failed to have an impact on the team in limited time this year. He’s appeared in just 13 games this season between injuries and healthy scratches. In that time he has a single goal and no assists while averaging a career-low 9:19 of ice time.

In previous seasons Klinkhammer had exhibited some strong possession numbers, making him an interesting depth piece, which may have been part of why teams were interested in acquiring him last season when he was traded twice. Once when the Penguins were looking to upgrade some offensive depth and then again soon after when the Penguins made a trade with the Oilers to acquire David Perron.

The Oilers gave Klinkhammer a one-year extension worth $725,000 in February.

He’s largely been relegated to a fourth line role. With the team recalling Zack Kassian, who was acquired in a trade for Ben Scrivens, a roster spot will be needed in order to activate Nail Yakupov, who is close to returning.
