Roundup: All the biggest trade deadline deals that DIDN’T happen

In case you missed it, there were 21 trades made in the NHL yesterday prior to the NHL’s 3pm ET deadline, with several prominent players trading locales. Mark Stone is now a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, while Wayne Simmonds will suit up for the Nashville Predators. Teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers were relatively quiet yesterday, whereas the Winnipeg Jets were seemingly involved in just about everything. The Minnesota Wild continued to tinker and the Boston Bruins went about their business in an understated way.

Now, a day later, reports are beginning to file in of all the trades that DIDN’T manage to get done yesterday. All the deals that, for whatever reason, weren’t able to be finalized before the deadline. Will teams circle back in the offseason? Or are these deals dead on arrival? Check out some of these trades that were in the offing, but fell apart prior to the deadline.

Jason Zucker to the Calgary Flames

Both Pierre LeBrun and Michael Russo reported that forward Jason Zucker was headed from the Minnesota Wild to the Calgary Flames and then… nothing. The 27 year old winger has 15 goals and 31 points in 62 games this season and was a force for the Wild last season with 33 goals and 64 points. It’s clear to see why Zucker would have been such a welcomed addition to the Flames roster, but it’s unclear why talks broke off.

Mark Stone to the Florida Panthers

According to a report from Florida Panthers insider George Richards, the Panthers were very close to acquiring Mark Stone from the Ottawa Senators, but were edged out by Vegas in a last minute bidding war.

#FlaPanthers GM Dale Tallon said they were in on Mark Stone and made what he said was a high offer. ‘we gave it our best shot, (Ottawa) just preferred the other deal better.’ Stone reportedly signing long term in Vegas, Panthers willing to do same.

Micheal Ferland to the Toronto Maple Leafs

According to a report from TSN insider Darren Dreger, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a last minute effort to acquire rugged winger Micheal Ferland from the Carolina Hurricanes. While Ferland’s name has been tossed around in trade talks, the Hurricanes are in the playoff hunt for the first time in years and so weren’t willing to part with Ferland just yet.

Connor Brown to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Matt Benning

Edmonton Oilers insider Jim Matheson reported that the Leafs and Edmonton Oilers were discussing a deal that would have seen Connor Brown headed West and right-shooting defenseman Matt Benning headed to Toronto.

As reported by @NHLbyMatty sounds like Oilers took a run at getting Connor Brown from Leafs but couldn’t make a deal work. My guess, Benning would have been the player they were pitching in return.

Obviously the deal never happened and now both sides are left wondering what happened.
