The Edmonton Oilers were hoping to make a big splash at the draft by acquiring a top tier National Hockey League defenseman, possibly by trading their number four pick in the draft.

Unfortunately Edmonton was not able to make any such move and as a result they are now left with the options of acquiring defenseman through free agency or making trades, and it sounds like the latter may be on the mind of general manager Peter Chiarelli.

According to a report from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal the New Jersey Devils may have their eyes on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins while Edmonton may have been scouting 21 year old defenseman Damon Severson. While this may seem like a bit of a bad trade for the Oilers, the move would not only give them a young defenseman with some promise, but it would also clear cap space for some of the moves they are rumored to be contemplating in free agency.
