Rumor: 30-goal scorer and 1st rounder will not get contract extension!

This might a surprising thing to read seeing that Buffalo Sabres sniper Evander Kane is having quite the season start! However, according to NHL insider Darren Dreger, the Sabres is not going to offer him a contract extension in the coming months. 

“I don’t think they’re going to re-sign him,” said Dreger during a Friday morning radio on Buffalo"s WGR 550. “Although the way he’s playing right now you can certainly develop a case for that in the moment. 10 points in seven games is mildly spectacular, as we often joke about players in their contract year."

Rival teams should be listening up and calling the Sabres to see what it would take to acquire the star forward. 

"He’s a big guy who has speed and clearly can score, and Buffalo and most teams need more of that and not less of that. So he’s in a great spot as general manager. He can continue to listen to that interest, hope that Evander Kane stays healthy and continues to play the way he is. And when he gets closer to Christmas, if you’re fortunate enough that you can hold onto even better up and around the trade deadline on February 26, then you’re going to get something decent for a player who’s probably going to be a rental player.”

“I had a Western Conference team yesterday just suggest that Evander Kane would be of great interest to them. No question about that. Would they consider even re-signing him? Yeah, potentially, but what’s that term," Dreger asked.

Kane’s salary for the past four seasons has been $6 million per year, but he does not have any trade protection built in to his current contract.

“So the good news for Botterill is he doesn’t have to make a decision on Evander Kane anytime soon. And that includes whether to consider trying to keep him in the fold. But he’s got time on his side to make those decisions.”

Kane might test the unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career this summer.
