The rumors flying around the Montreal Canadiens are growing ever louder and with this much smoke you genuinely have to start wondering where the fire is.
The latest comes from Danny Gelinas in French language publication la Voix de l'Est who has now added his voice to the ever growing number of voices that have serious doubts about general manager Marc Bergevin remaining with the Montreal Canadiens organization beyond this season. The interesting aspect about Gelinas report however is that it includes information about Canadiens owner Geoff Molson meeting with a former Canadiens legend in Patrick Roy while the rumors of a potential split with Bergevin have been swirling.
According to Gelinas sources, Molson would have met with Roy on two different occasions earlier in the year, with both meetings coming at some point in the spring. The substance of those meetings was not mentioned by the reporter, but he did add that his sources informed him that one of those meetings was held in Quebec City at the Hotel Hilton.
The news of multiple meetings with Roy, especially if they were for the purpose of scouting him as a potential candidate to replace Bergevin as general manager, comes as a surprise. Talk of a potential split between the Canadiens and Bergevin however does not, and in fact it seems to be the prevailing thought among many hockey pundits at this time.
Earlier today National Hockey League insider Larry Brooks also added his two cents when it comes to the rumors surrounding Bergevin, although in his case the report was not about Bergevin's potential replacement. Instead Brooks indicated that he had been informed by a well placed source that he should keep his eyes peeled for the possibility of Bergevin moving on next season, potentially landing with the Los Angeles Kings organization.
Brooks did not share any details about what kind of role Bergevin might be occupying with the Kings, but it does appear it would be a management role. The source indicated that Bergevin would be working alongside Luc Robitaille, and Robitaille is currently President of hockey operations for the Kings.
