Rumor: Another reason behind the departure of Tuukka Rask.

Boston Bruins star goaltender Tuukka Rask shocked the hockey world on Saturday when he announced that he would be leaving the bubble and would no longer be participating in the National Hockey League's Return to Play and the Stanley Cup playoffs. It was a stunning announcement that was only made all the more shocking by the fact that there seemed to be relatively little motivation behind his decision. Rask simply stated that he wanted to be with his family at this time, but given that every other player in the league is no doubt in the same boat as Rask it was almost unbelievable to see Rask step away in the middle of a playoff run. It may be though that there is more here than meets the eye.

On Saturday general manager Don Sweeney spoke to the media following the announcement of Rask's departure and he once again reiterated that Rask simply desired to be back home with his family. That would normally have been the end of it, however another reporter that has very close ties to Tuukka Rask has now made statements that would appear to contradict what the Bruins have stated publicly, and you have to wonder if there may have been another reason for Rask to step away from the Bruins here.

During the NESN broadcast of Game 3 between the Bruins and the Carolina Hurricanes, Bruins broadcaster Dale Arnold stated that the reasons behind Rask's sudden departure was actually related to a family emergency. If Rask did indeed depart over an emergency situation I think it would drastically change how his decision today has been perceived, but it may simply be a question of Rask wanting to keep things relatively private when it comes to his personal life. Arnold has reportedly been working on a new book and has been in direct contact with Rask according to 98.5 FM executive producer James Stewart who also pointed out that Arnold was reading the information directly from his phone while making his statements on the air.

I don't know who is right here but we have to consider that there is now a possibility that Rask left the team for a very different reason, although I would add that Don Sweeney insisted during his availability that Rask's family was fine.
