Rumor: Big trade between Habs and Wild falls apart at the last second.

Several times during the course of the offseason we have heard the name of Minnesota Wild defenseman Marco Scandella connected to the Montreal Canadiens, and now we may know why.

A report from Habs insider Marco Normandin has revealed that the Canadiens and Wild are believed to have very seriously discussed a trade at the draft that would have sent Scandella to the Habs in exchange for Montreal's first round selection in that very same draft.

The deal would make a great deal of sense as the Wild had already given up their first round pick in the draft in a deal for veteran forward Martin Hanzal, however it is believed that some unexpected results in the draft may have doomed the trade.

The Canadiens held off on the trade until the very last second but once they realized that 18-year-old center Ryan Poehling would fall to them, they pulled the trigger on the pick rather than the trade.

Given Montreal's consistent lack of depth up the middle in recent years, it's easy to see why they felt selecting Poehling had the greater long-term upside.
