Rumor: Cole to be traded this week?
Keystone Press

In his latest article for FanSided Pittsburgh Penguins blog Pens Labyrinth, blogger Conor Sherman takes a deep dive on the Ian Cole situation in Pittsburgh and draws up two potential trade scenarios that could play out this week.

The first has the 27-year-old defensive defenseman headed to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for center Tyler Bozak. Of course, this wouldn’t be a one-for-one deal and the Pens would likely need to add “a prospect and most-likely a high draft pick,” according to Sherman. Bozak would fill the 3rd line center role that Riley Sheahan was expected to fill when he was picked up from the Detroit Red Wings earlier this season.

The second trade option for Cole is with the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs are also in need of a defensive stalwart like Cole and could be enticed to move much-maligned center Alex Galchenyuk for the right return.  In this case, Sherman offers up a package of “Cole, Sebastian-Dea and a draft pick,” in exchange for the 23-year-old Galchenyuk.

As of yet, neither of these trade scenarios has been reported by mainstream media sources. But, on paper at least, the deals make sense from the Penguins perspective. Whether or not GM Jim Rutherford can convince his colleagues however, remains to be seen.
