Rumor: Could Bergevin adjust his trade target?

Duchene is probably out of the picture, is this a good alternative?

The Montreal Canadiens need goals. They need them badly. They are sitting at 4 goals in 4 games. There are several players right now that have more goals individually than Montreal has as a team.

It certainly doesn't help that one of the team's top snipers is now playing on the left wing of Torrey Mitchell. You know who we're talking about.

The Canadiens have long been attached to the Matt Duchene sweepstakes, but Darren Dreger of TSN recently stated that according to his sources, Montreal is not in on that race anymore. Which makes sense - Joe Sakic wants the world for Duchene and Marc Bergevin simply does not have what Colorado wants.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman suggests in this week's edition of 31 Thoughts that Bergevin targets Detroit Red Wings RFA Andreas Athanasiou. The speedy and skilled forward is seeking $2.5 million on a new contract, something Detroit can't afford to give. With over $7 million in cap space, the Canadiens could easily fit the talented player in their system. The only issue - GM Ken Holland wants a comparable player in return. So who does Bergevin give up?

We'll leave that to you to speculate.

Athanasiou scored 18 goals in 64 games last season. He is currently skating in Switzerland with HC Lugano.
