Devastating news.

This is certainly devastating news for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Although there has not been an official announcement on the part of the Carolina Hurricanes at this time it is really starting to look like the injury suffered today by Hurricanes defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk could put an end to his season. The Hurricanes were in New York on Sunday where they faced off against the New York Islanders for Game 2 of their second round series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and things turned bad for them pretty early on.

It was less than one minute into the game when van Riemsdyk was crushed against the boards by a thunderous hit from New York Islanders veteran Cal Clutterbuck, and by the way van Riemsdyk reacted it was obvious things were not good. The slow motion replay showed how van Riemsdyk arm and shoulder had become pinned between his own body and the unforgiving boards, and it was no surprise when he came up clutching at that same arm and shoulder on his way to the Hurricanes bench.

My first instinct was that he had either just broken his collarbone or suffered some form of a separated shoulder, and now the latest from Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rob Brind'Amour certainly points to a longer term injury. According to multiple reporters who spoke to Brind'Amour after Game 2, the former NHL star turned head coach made it clear that he does not expect to see van Riemsdyk in the near future.

The head coach said that the defenseman is "definitely not coming back any time soon," as per the Hurricanes own Michael Smith.

Not officially a season ending injury at this time, but it sounds like that is exactly where this is headed.

Update: Luke Decock has a full injury update and it's all bad.

Saku Maenalanen needs surgery and is out 2 weeks.

van Riemsdyk is out indefinitely.

Petr Mrazek is "day to day" but the Hurricanes are expected to call up a goalie which is not a good sign, especially when you consider that the Charlotte Checkers are themselves competing for a championship. Those factors suggest to me that the Hurricanes believe Mrazek will not be ready to go in Game 3, but that is only speculation on my part.
