Rumor: Edmonton Oilers could be pursuing a key UFA defenseman.

Chiarelli has to take a shot at him.

The Edmonton Oilers still have room for improvement this coming season, and one place to start is free agency.

An excellent paper signed by Sammi Silver from Oil on Whyte suggests that the Oilers should pursue Cody Franson by July first. 

Silver arguments are undeniable.

“Franson fills the holes that the Oilers need; not only is he a right-hand shot but a solid defenseman with strong possession numbers. While Russell blocks a lot of shots, he is a left-hand defender and doesn’t have the best possession metrics in the NHL.”

Not to mention, Franson brings a lot more size and physicality, which is something the Oilers need on the blue line.

Cody Franson played 68 games with the Buffalo Sabres last season. He scored 3 goals, registered 16 assists and 34 PIM.

Franson had a $3,325,000 cap hit last season but should sign for less this upcoming season.
