RUMOR : Flames' GM future in jeopardy?
Sportsnet

With the 2016-17 Calgary Flames now dead and buried, the team’s management group will have some difficult decisions to make on its future. But wait…who exactly is managing this team again? General manager Brad Treliving is on a contract that expires July 1st, 2017 and all indications are that he has not been negotiating an extension with ownership.

The uncertainty surrounding Treliving as the team’s general manager moving forward has been a constant background distraction for the team the entire season. Now that the season is over and ownership can finally get a complete and total look at his results, will they opt to bring him back?

It’s really hard to argue that Treliving hasn’t improved the Flames’ roster since arriving in Calgary in 2014. While he hasn’t hit a home run with every transaction, Treliving has added Dougie Hamilton, Sam Bennett, Matthew Tkachuk, Michael Frolik and Brian Elliott to the Flames’ roster among others. He has signed Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie and Mikael Backlund to smart contracts that give his team some cap flexibility moving forward.

So, what’s the hold up here?

There’s much work to be done if the Flames are to contend for the Stanley Cup playoffs again next season, but everything begins with a new commitment to Brad Treliving.
