Rumor: Flyers planning a big trade at the Draft
Zuma Press

Earlier this week Philadelphia Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher threw a curve ball at the entire hockey world when he pulled off a surprise trade for Winnipeg Jets forward Kevin Hayes. The 27 year old Hayes is slated to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, so long as he doesn’t sign a deal with the Flyers before then.

The Hayes acquisition is the latest in a Flyers shake up by Fletcher and more changes are expected to come this offseason. In fact, Flyers insider Sam Carchidi reported earlier this week that Fletcher is looking to flip the team’s 11th overall pick in this month’s NHL Entry Draft in exchange for “ a good player at the right stage of his career and with some term left on his contract.”

Check it out:

“We are aggressively looking in the trade market now,” Fletcher said. “At the right time, we’ll certainly speak to every agent for a lot of free agents and see if there’s a fit, see if there’s players that want to come to Philly and if there’s the right fit for our club.”

Interesting. Narrowing down the Flyers’ needs though could be difficult as, frankly, they need help just about everywhere.

“We need help everywhere,” Fletcher said. “We need help on defense, at center and on the wing. And obviously, we need another goaltender, at least, if not two. We have a lot of needs. We’ll be able to plug some of those holes, whether we’re plugging them with players on six-year deals or players on one-year deals as placeholders to buy more time to find the right fit. We’ll certainly have our roster upgraded next year, and hopefully we can find three or four players at 26 years old that we can plug in there for the next 6-7 years. I don’t know if that's likely.”

Be prepared for changes, Flyers fans.
