Rumor: Flyers set to 'take a run' at superstar goaltender.

The Philadelphia Flyers have a new general manager and it seems like he is already hard at work.

One of the biggest areas of concern for newly appointed Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher will almost assuredly be the organization's current struggles between the pipes. The Flyers have already run through a laundry list of goalies this season, 5 in fact, in large part due to the injuries plaguing them at the goaltending position and also in some small part due to the poor performance they have been getting out of all their goalies this season. Fixing that big of a problem however is never easy.

That being said though Fletcher did find himself a diamond in the rough when he was the general manager of the Minnesota Wild, acquiring goaltender Devan Dubnyk in a trade deal with the Arizona Coyotes. That deal has proven to be a major positive for the Wild franchise who still have Dubnyk as their #1 goaltender to this day but it does not sound like Fletcher intends to go the trade route this time around.

According to a recent report from Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Chris Johnston it sounds like instead the Flyers intend to take a run at one of the biggest names set to hit the free agent market this summer. Johnston reports that there are "whispers" that the Flyers are looking to sign veteran Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky come July 1st, and given the level of familiarity for both the organization and Bobrovsky it's a deal that would make sense in a lot of ways.

It was the Philadelphia Flyers who first gave Bobrovsky a shot at playing in the National Hockey League, bringing him over from the Kontinental Hockey League where he was playing at the time. However after he faltered in just his second season with the team the Flyers pulled the trigger on a trade that they likely still regret very much to this day. Since being traded by the Flyers Bobrovsky boasts the second best overall save percentage in the NHL with a .921 and has gone on to capture a pair of Vezina Trophies as well. Given the Flyers goaltending woes I have no doubt that is one deal they wish they could rewind.

That being said it sounds like there's no hope of the Blue Jackets signing Bobrovsky to a contract extension so perhaps the Flyers will get to correct that mistake by signing him as a free agent. That being said Bobrovsky is reportedly seeking Carey Price levels of money on his next deal, and that could cause a whole different set of problems for the Flyers in goal should they give in to those demands.
