Rumor: Former Sabres captain Gionta confirms Olympic plans

According to a report from WGR 550’s Paul Hamilton former Buffalo Sabres captain Brian Gionta is likely headed to Pyeongchang, South Korea to represent USA in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

When asked about the possibility Gionta said, “Still trying to weed through some things, but obviously the prospect of going to the Olympics is a positive as well, so right now, I’m focusing on staying in shape and being ready, looking towards the Olympics at this point barring anything different.” 

When Hamilton asked Gionta point blank whether he’ll be in Pyeongchang, Gionta replied, “Yes, I’d love to be a part of it, but there’s still some things to get through, but as of right now, we’re still entertaining things, trying to weed through some things, but at this stage, things are tough and you’ve got to find the right fit for the family.”

It certainly sounds like, barring an NHL contract, Gionta will be there for his country. The 38-year-old veteran has had discussions with NHL teams this offseason, but so far no offer has materialized. He’s made it clear that he’s not interested in an AHL deal or even a two-way deal, so it’s NHL or bust for the veteran. Gionta has had an outstanding career and produced 289 goals and 588 points in 1006 games for the Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and New Jersey Devils.
