Rumor: Future Hall-of-Famer rumored in trade after signing new contract.

We have a very big trade rumor in the National Hockey League.

In a recent article for the New York Post, New York Rangers insider Larry Brooks touched on the fact that the Rangers needed a big addition up the middle to make themselves a competitive team this season, and the move he believes they may be looking it is a shocker.

According to Brooks the Rangers had conversations earlier this summer with San Jose Sharks star forward Joe Thornton, arguably one of the best centers in the NHL even at this late stage of his career. While Thornton would go on to sign with the Sharks, Brooks believes there was interest there, and in fact there may still be interest there.

From Brooks:

The Post has learned the Rangers and Thornton had several productive conversations during the 38-year-old center’s free-agency period last summer that extended into midday of July 1. They ended almost at the same time Kevin Shattenkirk unexpectedly made himself available on a short-term deal and Thornton, coming off a serious knee injury, decided to return for a 13th season in San Jose.

But there is no doubt both parties were comfortable and intrigued with the idea of Thornton coming to New York to team up with his pal and Team Canada teammate, Rick Nash, while bolstering the team’s middle.

Brooks believes that Joe Thornton perfectly fits the profile of what Rangers' general manager Jeff Gorton is currently hunting for, and while he admits that a long of things would have to fall into place to make this deal a reality, he obviously believes it's very much a possibility.
