Rumor: Habs 30-goal scorer becomes trade candidate

The trade that ended up sending star forward Matt Duchene to the Ottawa Senators, in a three-way deal with the Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators, might inspire Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergvin

According to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, Bergevin would be wise to look at what Joe Sakic was able to accomplish and should look to shop captain Max Pacioretty for three or four pieces that could turn the franchise around.

Kypreos believes the Habs could decide to head into a rebuild mode, especially if they don't make the playoffs this upcoming spring. If the Canadiens cannot reach the postseason, Bergevin will be under pressure to turn things around.

To get the best return possible, the Habs GM could look to move top players, and Pacioretty, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019, seems like most likely trade candidate.

Alex Galchenyuk was also named in trade chatter, but he might be more difficult to move to get an interesting return like the one the Avalanche got for Duchene...

In 16 games this season, Pacioretty has recorded six goals and 10 points.

It would not be the first time Bergevin completes a major trade... A lot will be determined on the Habs' next plan of action in the course of the coming months.

Stay tuned...
