Rumor: Habs rejected a big trade and it may have been a big mistake.

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin has earned a reputation as a GM who isn't afraid to pull the trigger when it comes to trades, but one deal he shied away from in the offseason may come back to haunt him.

In a recent radio interview TSN insider Pierre LeBrun revealed his belief that the Canadiens nearly traded Alex Galchenyuk to the New Jersey Devils early this year, but backed off at the last minute.

" I think they nearly traded him this summer," said LebBrun as per Fanrag's Chris Nichols. "I think the Devils were in some pretty heavy talks with the Canadiens. The Habs I think pulled him back because they were like, ‘He’s worth more than this."

Obviously if the Devils were only offering a bag of hockey pucks you don't make the trade, but given how Galchenyuk has played to start the season if the Devils did make a significant offer the Habs may come to regret not moving him earlier.

LeBrun believes that the team will eventually trade Galchenyuk, although he believes they want to attempt to build his value back up before they move him. Perhaps that is why they moved him back to the wing to start the season.
