Moves that were rumored roughly two and a half years ago may finally be coming to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In a recent segment on TSN insider Pierre LeBrun discussed the possibility of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello being in the final year of his tenure as the guiding hand of the Leafs.

While LeBrun was careful to say that it's still possible Lamoriello, who is in the final year of his current contract, will return after this season, there are two younger men who have been chomping at the bit to take over that role.

"Is Kyle Dubas the next GM as early as next year? Is Mark Hunter a candidate?"

Dubas, considered one of the best analytics experts in the game, was linked to a possible role with the Colorado Avalanche last season but the Maple Leafs insisted on hanging on to him. One has to wonder how much longer Dubas would be willing to wait if offers for general manager positions are coming from rival teams.

Hunter on the other hand is considered a brilliant scout of young talent and is largely credited with the Leafs decision to draft Mitch Marner, a decision that looks like a genius move at this stage of Marner's National Hockey League career.

LeBrun believes that Brendan Shanahan has a tough choice ahead of him, and perhaps more importantly believes that his final decision has not yet been made.

"I don't believe a final decision has been made as far as I can tell, but it's a decision that will have a huge impact on how this young team continues to evolve."

This could mark the end of an era for both the Maple Leafs and perhaps even the NHL.
