National Hockey League fans noticed the Detroit Red Wings putting an end to the Andreas Athanasiou saga yesterday, signing him to a one-year $1.378 million contract, but something else needs to be noted from that transaction.

General manager Ken Holland said before the deal can be signed officially, the club must shed an equal amount of salary because it is already at the cap limit.

"Ultimately, in some point in time in the next few days to a week-to-two weeks we have to make some type of moves to get Andreas onto our roster," Holland said to MLive.com.

Enter Riley Sheahan. One option for the Red Wings would be to trade Sheahan and his $2.075 million salary cap hit. The Pittsburgh Penguins have been looking a third-line centre, and other teams were said to have inquired about Sheahan as far back as before last season's trade deadline.

Picks and/or prospects could be the asking price to allow the Red Wings to remain under cap, and build a steady future.

A trade could be coming up sooner than later between the Wings and the Pens.
