This would make the Eberle trade look like small potatoes. Does GM Garth Snow have the guts to pull the trigger?

Rumor: Islanders targeting two young stars?

In his latest article for New York Islanders blog Eyes on Isles, blogger David Lazar takes a look at the team’s roster and puts forth a unique proposition for filling the gaping hole at the center ice position on the team’s second line. Lazar’s idea? Offer sheet either Vancouver Canucks pivot Bo Horvat or Columbus Blue Jackets pivot Alexander Wennberg.

Both RFAs are coming off of 50+ point seasons, yet remain unsigned deep into the offseason. While RFA offer sheets are rare, a long-term deal worth $5.5 million annually may be enough to pry the youngsters away, according to Lazar. And what if the Isles are unsuccessful? No harm done. They can turn their focus back to other options like Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene.

If the Canucks or Blue Jackets were willing to walk away from an offer sheet, the Isles would be on the hook for at least a first and third round pick, maybe even a second round pick depending on the salary. Is this steep cost of acquisition too prohibitive? What do you think?
