It’s been nearly three months since the Edmonton Oilers last had an official general manager. It was mid January, of course, when Oilers CEO Bob Nicholson officially relieved general manager Peter Chiarelli of his duties. Since then interim-GM Keith Gretzky has held the fort in Edmonton and there are many Oilers fans and analysts who believe that Gretzky has the inside track at landing the permanent position.

Hold your horses though, says Edmonton broadcaster Dustin Nielsen of TSN 1260.

I’ve heard from two different sources that Keith Gretzky has been told he won’t be getting the GM job.
Maybe a search that comes up empty changes things? Take it for what it’s worth at this point.
I wonder if he sticks around if he doesn’t get it.

Interesting. If this is indeed true, it could spell an end to the Oilers infamous “Old Boys Club”, as the team’s front office would be forced to go outside the organization for its next hire.

Stay tuned, Oilers fans.
