Rumor: Laine reportedly turns down two year deal from Jets

We’re just days away from the opening of the NHL regular season and one of the NHL’s brightest young stars remains without a contract. Winnipeg Jets sniper Patrik Laine continues to skate in Switzerland while his representation work on getting a deal done with Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff.

And while there’s been little to report in the way of progress, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of TSN did report yesterday evening that he believes Laine was offered and rejected a two year, $12 million offer from the Jets.

Check out this except from last night’s Insider Trading segment on TSN:

LeBrun: I will say this. There have been discussions this week. Both between Patrik Laine and his camp and the Winnipeg Jets, and Mikko Rantanen and his camp and the Colorado Avalanche. So that is the positive. The negative is they haven’t closed the gap just yet. I believe the Jets recently offered a two-year deal, yes, a two-year bridge deal at around $6 million a year. My sense is that the Laine camp led by Mike Liut would rather be north of $7 million a year on a two-year bridge. So, still a gap right there.

For the record, the Calgary Flames locked up RFA Matthew Tkachuk to a three year deal worth $7 million per season earlier this week and the Vancouver Canucks locked up Brock Boeser to a three year deal at $5.875 million per season just last week.

The Jets have plenty of cap space to sign Laine, but GM Kevin Cheveldayoff also have RFA Kyle Connor to lock up, as well. Then there’s the matter of whether or not Dustin Byfuglien will return or not. Suffice it to say, there’s a lot up in the air for the Jets right now.
