The Toronto Maple Leafs may be in prime position to pull of a trade.

Earlier today we reported on the rumors of a potential trade between the Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins. While that trade focused on a potential trade of Penguins veteran defenseman Ian Cole for Leafs veteran forward Tyler Bozak there is now talk of a potential goaltending trade between the two teams.

With the injury Penguins starting goaltender Matt Murray, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman believes that two of Toronto's goalies could potentially solve two of the Penguins' problems.

From Friedman:

Mackey reported Colorado, Toronto and Vegas as potential partners. I could see the first two for sure, especially since the Maple Leafs have Calvin Pickard and Garret Sparks in the AHL if the Penguins feel they need a bridge during Matt Murray’s injury hiatus.

Not only could Sparks and Pickard be suitable backups while Matt Murray recovers from an injury that is expected to keep him out weeks, but it would also solve the problem they currently have with backup goaltender Tristan Jarry.

The Penguins want to get Jarry as much playing time as possible, and when Murray returns having either Pickard or Sparks on the roster would allow them to send him back down to the American Hockey League to get some more experience under his belt.

It's unclear if these teams have even discussed this possibility, but it adds one more wrinkle to the rumors surrounding these two teams.
