There have been rumors for some time now that Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin has been diligently searching for one or two moves he can make to improve his time prior to the playoffs, but that doesn't mean he's about to make a bad deal.

One of the rumors the Canadiens have been linked to has been that involving Arizona Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal, and on Tuesday Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that those talks had taken place but the Canadiens had rejected the Coyotes demands.

From Friedman:

Word is Arizona’s initial ask from Montreal for Martin Hanzal was Michael McCarron and two draft picks — one a first-rounder, the other conditional. I look at it this way: You never know until you ask. But it also tells you why Hanzal is not a Canadien. We’ll see if both teams circle back.

It's a lot to ask for a center who has only played in 39 games this season, recording 10 goals and 8 assists and earning a plus minis rating of -15, and fans in Montreal will likely be glad their GM rejected that proposal.

It's still early though and we wouldn't be surprised if these talks pick up again closer to the trade deadline.
