Rumor: NHL GM admits to working trade phones

Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee raised some eyebrows around the league when he demoted forwards Vadim Shipachyov and Alex Tuch, as well as defenseman Shea Theodore to the AHL earlier this week. But now, McPhee has come out in defense of his transactions and explained how the moves could set the stage for even bigger developments.

“We assigned Shipachyov, Tuch and Theodore to Chicago [Wolves] because we could,” McPhee said to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “We’re still two days away from our first game, so we have a little more time to assess things and make adjustments to our roster,” he added.

So, what sort of assessments is McPhee looking to make?

“We’ll see how things go. We could make one trade. We could make three.”

Boom. There it is. From the moment Shipachyov, Tuch and Theodore were demoted, analysts have been playing the “when, not if” game surrounding a Vegas trade. So, who’s on the move? TSN analyst Bob McKenzie speculates that Deryk Engelland, Jason Garrison and Luca Sbisa will all remain with the team. Ditto for Theodore, Nate Schmidt and Colin Miller. But one, or all three of Brad Hunt, Griffin Reinhart and Jon Merrill could be moved before Friday’s season opener for the Knights.

So, who’s on the move? And to where?
